Los Angeles Angels first baseman/DH Kendrys Morales is running and has been cleared to ?ramp up? some baseball-related activities, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Morales hasn?t played in the majors since May 29, 2010, when he fractured his left ankle while celebrating a walkoff home run. He has had two surgical procedures on the ankle and has endured a series of setbacks since suffering the injury.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the doctor who performed the second surgery examined Morales this week and gave him the green light to step up his rehab work. Morales isn?t believed to have any restrictions, though a much truer test of his health will come when he tries to do things such as run the bases.
Morales hit .306 with 34 homers and 108 RBIs in 2009 and was hitting .290 with 11 homers and 39 RBIs before the injury in 2010.
Once Morales finally returns to the Angels? lineup, it likely will be as their primary DH. Earlier this offseason, the team signed first baseman Albert Pujols to a 10-year, $250 million contract.
In addition, Mark Trumbo, the runner-up for AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2011, also plays first base. However, he still is recovering from a stress fracture in his right foot and will get a look at third base once he is healthy. Trumbo hit .254 with 29 homers and 87 RBIs in 2011.
There has been speculation that the Angels could trade Trumbo or Morales once they both are fully recovered.
