SALT LAKE CITY ? This Saturday the American Cancer Society and Fox 13 are teaming up to fight breast cancer.
Survivors will share their stories at the ?Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.?
This year?s keynote speaker, Wendy Brimley, had a feeling months before she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was only 39 years old but asked for a mammogram; her doctor told her she wouldn?t really need one until she was in her forties.
?Seven months later I found it. It was severe enough I had to have a mastectomy and full chemo, radiation, several surgeries,? Brimley said. ?But here I am!?
For two years she?s been in remission and on a personal mission to raise awareness and education to women of all ages about the dangers of breast cancer.
?Utah has the lowest screening rate in the country for breast cancer,? Cidne Christensen with the American Cancer Society said.? ?Women don?t get their mammograms when they?re supposed to, which also means we have the lowest rate of early detection.?
The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is meant to bring awareness and help raise money for cancer treatment.
The walk takes place on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. It?s open and free to the public.
There will be Zumba Fitness at 7:30 a.m. and registration begins at 8 a.m. The walk starts at 9 a.m.
Donations are appreciate and will go toward research and services for breast cancer patients.
