Activities celebrate National Physical Therapy Month

SUGAR GROVE ??October is National Physical Therapy Month, and West Physical Therapy locales in Sugar Grove and Geneva are celebrating with weekly contests, games, health checks and tips.

Julie West, owner of West Physical Therapy at 38 S. Main St., Sugar Grove, and 2700 Keslinger Road, Geneva, said among the contests is a game called ?move forward.?

?Whoever comes in gets a game token and answers a question regarding health or a tip of the day,? West said. ?Sometimes, it will be about blood pressure or balance or fitness.?

The month includes screenings for balance. West said there are different tests that show what is normal for a person?s age.

?It?s a functional reach test performed to show how far a person can reach into a cabinet or forward without losing balance,? West said. ?It?s a certain number of inches based on age.?

Another activity is a timed get-up-and-go test to see how fast a person can get up from a chair and walk around a cone and back.

?There is a norm on how fast a person should go,? West said.

The promotion includes free popcorn Thursdays and Fridays.

The facilities will incorporate the national organization?s ?50 Days 50 Ways? challenge that runs through Nov. 19. During this challenge, the website of the national organization, www.apta.org, and West Physical Therapy, www.facebook.com/westphysicaltherapy, will provide 50 days worth of tips to baby boomers on how to prevent injury, get fit or stay fit and mobile with the help of a physical therapist.

Participation in the events is open to the public, West said.

?It?s going on every day we are open,? West said.
