Cricket-Boucher axed as South Africa make ODI changes

JOHANNESBURG | Fri Dec 30, 2011 7:02pm GMT

JOHANNESBURG Dec 30 (Reuters) - Wicketkeeper Mark Boucher was one of three players dropped on Friday when South Africa named their squad for next month's one-day internationals against Sri Lanka.

Boucher, 35, who holds the world record for most test dismissals (540), batsman David Miller and leg-spinner Imran Tahir have paid the price for the limited-overs series defeat at home to Australia in October.

Dean Elgar, a left-handed batsman and part-time spinner, and all-rounder Rory Kleinveldt were called up as Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced a 14-man squad for the first two games of January's five-match series against Sri Lanka.

Kleinveldt, 28, is in line for his ODI debut after two Twenty20 internationals while Elgar, 24, impressed in South Africa's domestic limited-overs competition.

The team will be led by wicketkeeper-batsman AB de Villiers for the first time since he was appointed as ODI captain.

"Elgar fully deserves his opportunity," CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson said in a statement.

"He was the leading run-scorer in the (domestic) one-day cup and also had the best average. In addition he gives us very useful bowling options as a left-arm spinner.

"Kleinveldt played an important role with the ball in helping the Cobras to win the one-day cup and he also has a lot of potential as a lower-order power hitter."

The first game of the series takes place in Paarl on Jan. 11 with the final match scheduled for Jan. 22 in Johannesburg.

South Africa squad: Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, AB de Villiers (captain), JP Duminy, Francois du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Jacques Kallis, Rory Kleinveldt, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe. (Reporting by Jason Humphries, editing by Stephen Wood)

Egypt U-Turn on Alcohol Limit Exposes Debt Struggle: Arab Credit

Dec. 29 (Bloomberg) -- When Hakem Rustom arrived at Cairo?s airport on Dec. 19 he was told he could only buy one bottle of wine at the duty-free shop instead of the usual four. He had Egypt?s growing budget deficit to blame.

?I tried to negotiate, but they said it was strictly one per passenger,? the 34 year-old PhD student said by phone. Reducing tax-free quotas on alcohol and tobacco at airports was part of an attempt to boost revenue as Egypt seeks to cut its budget deficit. The government reversed the decision on Dec. 25. Duty-free-shop owner Egypt Free Shops Co. said the restrictions would have led to a ?severe fall? in sales.

The U-turn is the latest example of how the three prime ministers since President Hosni Mubarak?s ouster in February are struggling to stick to policy, making it harder to attract donors and investors. Borrowing costs have climbed to records and foreign currency reserves have tumbled 44 percent in the first 11 months of the year. The yield on one-year treasury bills jumped 463 basis points this year to 15.292 percent.

?There is no time for this indecisiveness,? Alia Mamdouh, an economist at investment bank CI Capital, said by phone from Cairo on Dec. 27. ?To impose a decision and then reverse it like that would give an image to the IMF and the World Bank, and others who may want to help, that they wouldn?t know what to do with the money and have no vision.?

More Backtracking

It?s not the first time the government backs down. Former Finance Minister Samir Radwan said in June he requested a $3.2 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, announced the agreement with the fund at a news conference in Cairo, before turning it down after the military, which took interim power from Mubarak, vetoed foreign borrowing.

Radwan also backtracked on a decision to impose a capital- gains tax after businessmen, including billionaire Naguib Sawiris, opposed it. The former finance minister and the current government of Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri also delayed a real-estate tax.

The decision to phase out custom exemptions on alcohol sent prices for imported liquor in the black market soaring, the state-owned Ahramonline reported on Dec. 27. Finance Minister Momtaz El-Saeed faced discontent from workers in the tourism industry, the news website said.

El-Saeed didn?t return calls seeking comment yesterday. A finance ministry official, who declined to be identified because of department regulations, said the minister?s decision was aimed at plugging holes in the budget deficit by boosting revenue.

?They?re in urgent need of cash,? CI Capital?s Mamdouh said.

Economic Growth Slumps

Ganzouri has lamented donors? failure to make good on aid pledges to help the country in its transition toward democracy.

?Nothing has arrived? from the $35 billion pledged for Egypt and Tunisia by the Group of Eight major economies, el- Ganzouri said in a televised news conference on Dec. 22. Egypt?s ?Arab brothers? delivered only $1 billion out of $10.5 billion promised in soft loans and aid, he said.

Violence and the transition from military rule to democracy dragged Egypt?s economic growth down to 0.2 percent in the first quarter of the fiscal year which started in July, from 0.4 percent in the previous three months, the Ministry of Planning said this month. Growth was 5.1 percent in the fiscal year that ended June 2010. The government raised its budget deficit target this month for the fiscal year through June to 10 percent of economic output from 8.6 percent.

Tourism Revenue

Some relief could come from the IMF as the government plans to resume talks with the fund on the $3.2 billion loan in the first week of January, International Cooperation Minister Fayza Aboulnaga said in an interview in Cairo on Dec. 27.

The Arab Monetary Fund also agreed to lend Egypt $470 million, part of which was dedicated to help bring down the $12.7 billion balance of payments deficit registered in the first nine months of this year. Egypt posted a surplus of $719 million in the same period in 2010, according to central bank data.

Tourism revenue tumbled 32 percent to $6.3 billion in the first nine months, while foreign investors sold $7.5 billion in treasury bills and bonds.

The yield on Egypt?s 5.75 percent dollar bond due April 2020 soared 280 basis points, or 2.8 percentage point, this year to 8 percent at 11:00 a.m. in Cairo today, seven basis points shy of the record on Dec. 23. The average yield on Middle East sovereign bonds declined 27 basis points in the period to 4.92 percent on Dec. 28, according to the HSBC/Nasdaq Dubai Middle East Conventional Sovereign US Dollar Bond Index.

?Bottomless Pit?

Mounting debt and plunging foreign-currency reserves may prompt donors to ask Egypt to adopt a ?more flexible policy? on the exchange rate and seek ?some clarity? on the government?s plan to cut energy subsidies, said Simon Kitchen, a strategist at EFG-Hermes Holding SAE, the biggest publicly traded Arab investment bank.

?Official lenders and donors don?t want to pour funds into a bottomless pit,? he said Dec. 27 in response to e-mailed questions. ?Unfortunately, it is difficult for Egypt to give commitments on these issues during a political transition.?

Egypt?s pound has lost 3.8 percent against the dollar this year after a drop of 5.5 percent in 2010. Its decline has been capped as the central bank upholds a policy, reiterated in Dec. 6 statement, to ?safeguard an orderly foreign exchange market.?

That has helped the pound outperform currencies in countries that didn?t experience Egypt?s turmoil. Brazil?s real tumbled 11 percent, India?s rupee lost 16 percent and Turkey?s lira retreated 19 percent.

The government?s U-turn on the alcohol limit didn?t come in time for Rustom, the PhD student, to get the three extra bottles of imported wine that he wanted for a Christmas party.

?I had to buy local wine,? he said. ?It wasn?t the same, but it was fine.?

All eyes on German renewable energy efforts (AP)

FELDHEIM, Germany ? This tiny village of 37 gray homes and farm buildings clustered along the main road in a wind-swept corner of rural eastern Germany seems an unlikely place for a revolution.

Yet environmentalists, experts and politicians from El Salvador to Japan to South Africa have flocked here in the past year to learn how Feldheim, a village of just 145 people, is already putting into practice Germany's vision of a future powered entirely by renewable energy.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government passed legislation in June setting the country on course to generate a third of its power through renewable sources ? such as wind, solar, geothermal and bioenergy ? within a decade, reaching 80 percent by 2050, while creating jobs, increasing energy security and reducing harmful emissions.

The goals are among the world's most ambitious, and expensive, and other industrialized nations from the U.S. to Japan are watching to see whether transforming into a nation powered by renewable energy sources can really work.

"Germany can't afford to fail, because the whole world is looking at the German model and asking, can Germany move us to new business models, new infrastructure?," said Jeremy Rifkin, a U.S. economist who has advised the European Union and Merkel.

In June, the nation passed the 20 percent mark for drawing electric power from a mix of wind, solar and other renewables. That compares with about 9 percent in the United States or Japan ? both of which rely heavily on hydroelectric power, an energy source that has long been used.

Expanding renewables depends on the right mix of resources, as well as government subsidies and investment incentive ? and a willingness by taxpayers to shoulder their share of the burden. Germans currently pay a 3.5 euro cent per kilowatt-hour tax, roughly euro157 ($205) per year for a typical family of four, to support research and investment in and subsidize the production and consumption of energy from renewable sources.

That allows for homeowners who install solar panels on their rooftops, or communities like Feldheim that build their own biogas plants, to be paid above-market prices for selling back to the grid, to ensure that their investment at least breaks even.

Critics, like the Institute for Energy Research, based in Washington, D.C., maintain such tariffs put an unfair burden of expanding renewables squarely on the taxpayer. At the same time, to make renewable energy work on the larger scale, Germany will have to pour billions into infrastructure, including updating its grid.

Key to success of the transformation will be getting the nation's powerful industries on board, to drive innovation in technology and create jobs. According to the Environment Ministry, overall investment in renewable energy production equipment more than doubled to euro29.4 billion ($38.44 billion) in 2011. Solid growth in the sector is projected through the next decade.

Some 370,000 people in Germany now have jobs in the renewable sector, more than double the number in 2004, a point used as proof that tax payers' investment is paying off.

Feldheim has zero unemployment ? despite its tiny size ? compared with roughly 30 percent in other villages in the economically depressed state of Brandenburg, which views investments in renewables as a ticket for a brighter future. Most residents work in the plant that produces biogas ? fuel made by the breakdown of organic material such as plants or food waste ? or maintain the wind and solar parks that provide the village's electricity.

"The energy revolution is already taking place right here," says Werner Frohwitter, spokesman for the Energiequelle company that helped set up and run Feldheim's energy concept.

But it's not only in the country. Earlier this month in Berlin, officials unveiled a prototype of a self-sustaining, energy-efficient home, built from recycled materials and complete with electric vehicles that can be charged in its garage.

The aim of the prototype home is to produce twice as much energy as is used by a family of four ? chosen from a willing pool of volunteers who will be selected to live in the home for 15 months ? through a combination of solar photovoltaics and energy management technology, in order to show the technology already exists to allow people to be energy self-sufficient.

"We want to show people that already today it is possible to live completely from renewable energy," said German Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer as the project, dubbed "Efficiency House Plus," was unveiled. The house is part of a wider euro1.2 million ($1.57 million) project investing in energy-efficient buildings.

"The Efficiency House Plus will set standards that can be adopted by the majority in the short term," Ramsauer told The Associated Press. "The basic principle is that the house produces more energy than needed to live. The extra energy is then used to charge electric-powered cars and bicycles or sold back to the public grid."

Germany's four leading car makers are also participating in the project with BMW AG, Daimler AG, Volkswagen AG and Opel, which is part of Buick's parent company, General Motors Co., each making an E-car for use by in the home.

Such strong cooperation between Germany's industrial sector coupled with a political landscape that emphasizes stability and a heightened public ecological sensibility makes Germany fertile ground to lead the way in the transformation from a post-carbon economy to one run on renewable energy.

"Germany has the most robust industrial economy per capita. When you talk about industrial revolution, that's Germany. It's German technology, it's German IT, it's German commutation," said Rifkin, who outlines what he calls the "The Third Industrial Revolution," in a newly released book of the same title that explains how the economies in the future could swap fossil fuels for renewable energies and still maintain growth.

Robert Pottmann, an asset manager with Munich Re, one of the world's biggest reinsurers, says the company seeks to invest about euro2.5 billion ($3.27 billion) in the next few years in renewable energy assets such as "wind farms, solar projects or maybe new electricity grids."

Alan Simpson, an independent energy and climate adviser from Britain who visited Feldheim as part of a wider tour of Germany last month to see what the renewable revolution looks like up close said it was inspiring to view what is being accomplished on the ground.

"It's great to think about Germany delivering on everything that we are being told in Great Britain is impossible," Simpson said.

Amid the excitement, there is also an awareness of the real need for the German experiment to succeed.

"If Germany can't pull this off," said Rifkin. "We don't have a plan B."

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Final Destination 5 and Apollo 18

Plus, a few other choices during this post-Christmas lull.

It's shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that the home video choices this week are rather slim; most studios try to make sure they have all of their best stuff ready to go before Christmas, naturally. With that in mind, we bring you an abbreviated edition of RT on DVD, focusing on just five new releases that are hitting shelves. For those of you who are also avid television-watchers, some items of interest we won't be covering include Season 2 of the animated series Archer, the first seasons of two Showtime dramas The Borgias and Shameless, and the first season of IFC sitcom The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, which stars Arrested Development alumni David Cross and Will Arnett. That said, we will be covering two horror movies, a raunchy comedy, a Romanian film, and a fascinating documentary. See below for the full list!

(AP) ? The Obama administration is weighing an unprecedented diplomatic act ? whether to bar a friendly president from U.S. soil.

American officials were evaluating on Tuesday an awkward request from Yemeni strongman and longtime U.S. counterterrorism partner Ali Abdullah Saleh. Saleh has said he plans to come to the United States for medical treatment for injuries suffered in a June assassination attempt, and he has asked for a U.S. visa for entry to the country. Fearful of appearing to harbor an autocrat with blood on his hands, the Obama administration was trying to ensure that Saleh visits only for medical care and doesn't plan to stay, U.S. officials said.

Washington's hesitation reflects the shifting alliances and foreign policy strategy prompted by a year of upheaval in the Arab world. Saleh has served as an American ally against al-Qaida and will soon transfer power under a U.S.-backed deal with Yemen's opposition aimed at ending months of instability. He isn't subject to any U.S. or international sanctions.

But he also is accused of committing gross human rights violations during a year of internal conflict, and the U.S. is trying not to burn any bridges with Yemeni political groups likely to take part in future governments. Political asylum for Saleh in the United States, or the appearance of preferential treatment from an administration that has championed peaceful and democratic change, would be highly unpopular with Yemenis who've fought to depose their dictator of 33 years.

Officials close to the Saleh said Washington's suspicion that he may seek political asylum was delaying approval of his trip. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. But American officials appeared to substantiate those concerns and said they were troubled by Saleh's recent comments portraying his trip as a move designed to ease the political transition.

"What we're looking at now is a request to come to the United States for the sole purpose of medical treatment," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said, refusing to go into the specific of the evaluation. "That permission has not been granted yet."

Toner declined to elaborate on the assurances the United States wanted from Saleh or offer a timetable for a decision. He also couldn't say whether any provisions existed under U.S. law to prevent the Yemeni leader from visiting the country ? provided he assures officials he demonstrates he'll only stay temporarily.

In that case, Saleh almost surely will be granted entry, U.S. officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because visa evaluations are supposed to be confidential. It's unclear when, if ever, the last time the head of state of a friendly government was blocked from visiting the United States.

One official went so far as to say Saleh's exit from Yemen might be beneficial by lowering the risk of disruptions in the lead-up to planned February elections. The U.S. is committed to doing everything it can to ensure those elections take place, the official said, but President Barack Obama's national security team was expected to make the final decision on Saleh's request. Obama was being briefed on developments while on vacation in Hawaii.

Demonstrators began protesting against Saleh and calling for his ouster in February. The Yemeni government responded with a bloody crackdown, leaving hundreds of protesters dead, and stoking fears of instability in a nation grappling with burgeoning extremism. Yemen's dangerous al-Qaida branch, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, has taken advantage of the vacuum to expend its presence in the south of the country.

International pressure has mounted for months for Saleh to step aside. A June rocket attack on his compound left him badly burned and wounded, and led Saleh to seek medical treatment in neighboring Saudi Arabia for three months. American officials had hoped he would remain there, but the Yemeni leader returned and violence worsened anew.

Last month, Saleh agreed to a Saudi-backed deal to hand power to his vice president and commit to stepping down completely in exchange for immunity. The deal further angered Saleh's opponents, who demanded he be tried for his attacks on protesters. Opponents also lament that he has continued to wield influence through loyalists and relatives remaining in positions of power, and many fear he may find a way to continue his rule.

Protests have expanded recently to include labor strikes, calls for Saleh to be put on trial and demands that his loyalists to be removed from office. Activists said troops commanded by Saleh's relatives attacked protesters in the capital of Sanaa over the weekend, killing at least nine people. Tens of thousands demonstrated the following day.

Saleh's immediate plans are unclear. The wily leader of three decades has maintained his rule over a country divided by tribal and regional loyalties by consistently outsmarting his opponents, but Toner said the U.S. is trying to remind everyone of the "importance of continuing along this agreed-upon path of political transition that will lead to the next election."

"We need to see that process continue regardless of where President Saleh is," Toner said.

An American official said Saleh's office informed the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa that the outgoing leader would leave Yemen soon and travel elsewhere abroad first, before possibly coming to the U.S.

The situation offers an eerie parallel to three decades ago, when President Jimmy Carter allowed the exiled shah of Iran into the U.S. for medical treatment. The decision contributed to rapidly worsening relations between Washington and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's revolution in Tehran, with Iranian students occupying the U.S. Embassy in Iran a month later.

Fifty-two American hostages were held for 444 days in response to Carter's refusal to send the shah back to Iran for trial.

Rose lifts Bulls over Lakers in NBA opener

LOS ANGELES ? Derrick Rose scored the go-ahead basket with 4.8 seconds remaining as the Chicago Bulls opened their new NBA season with an 88-87 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

While Rose provided the finishing scoring touch, teammate Luol Deng gave the Bulls the fourth-quarter spark they needed to come from behind in front of a Christmas Day crowd of 18,997 at Staples Center arena.

?We showed fight,? said Rose. ?We don?t want to be in a situation like that but we got it done.?

Deng scored nine points in the final quarter and intercepted a Kobe Bryant pass then quickly got the ball to Rose who drove to the basket before pulling up and draining a short one-handed lob.

Bryant had a chance to put the Lakers back in front but his jumper from in close was blocked by Deng at the buzzer.

?I wanted to crowd him so he didn?t have a jump shot,? Deng said of Bryant.

Rose finished with 22 points and five assists and Deng had 21 points for the Bulls who moved to 7-7 in their last 14 season openers.

?That is just something I am used to doing if I am going to my right hand. They let me get to my right hand and that?s how it got up,? Rose same of the game-winning shot.

Bryant, who is playing with a bandaged wrist to protect a torn tendon, scored a game high 28 points and Pau Gasol had 14 points for the Lakers who have a 36-16 record in season openers in franchise history.

This was the first time since the start of the 2008-09 season that the Lakers haven?t begun their home schedule with a championship ring ceremony at centre court.

Instead Lakers guard and president of the players union, Derek Fisher, took the microphone before the game to talk about the new collective bargaining agreement.

?Everybody wasn?t happy with the process or the finished product but thanks for your support and patience,? Fisher told the crowd.

After almost having to cancel the season, the league and players union agreed on a last-minute labour deal which resulted in a compressed 66-game schedule, beginning with five games on Christmas Day.

Because of the lockout teams have had a little more than two weeks and just two exhibition games to get ready for the season.

Dallas caught fire last year and beat the Miami Heat for the NBA title but the Heat earned a measure of revenge Sunday by holding on to beat the Mavericks 105-94.

In another opening-day game, the New York Knicks edged the Boston Celtics 106-104.

In later games, Oklahoma City hosts Orlando and the Los Angeles Clippers visit Golden State.

The Lakers are one of the NBA?s most storied franchises but they enter the season with plenty of uncertainty. The biggest concern being the absence of legendary coach Phil Jackson who retired with 11 championship rings.

Fragile centre Andrew Bynum is suspended for the first four games of the season, Bryant is playing with a torn tendon in his right wrist which he has decided not to have surgery on and Lamar Odom is gone to rival Dallas after demanding a trade during the pre-season.

?We are going through some growing pains and we are going to have to learn from them,? Lakers coach Mike Brown said. ?This one hurts, whether we lost by one point or 10 points.?

The Bulls have now taken the last two meetings in the series after dropping seven straight to the Lakers.

Chicago are one of the pre-season favourites to win the championship this year after making it all the way to the league semi-finals last year before losing to Miami in five games.

Reigning league MVP Rose, 23, recently signed a five-year, multi-million dollar contract extension.

The arts, oil and sponsorship

Robert Newman's article attacking arts sponsorship in general, and BP's recent announcement to give ?10m to four national arts institutions in particular (Why are Britain's great art houses in bed with Big Oil?, 21 December), raises important points. I must declare an interest ? Arts & Business has been supported by BP for over 30 years and is proud of the partnership. Our founding chairman, Arnold Goodman, a exemplary former chair of the Arts Council, declared to me over 25 years ago that "wherever the money comes from ? it can be rolled by the mafia ? if it goes to the arts it becomes good money".

Not that I believe BP's is bad money, far from it. They are exemplary citizens, they acknowledge their mistakes and pay their taxes. Indeed they pay billions of pounds to the UK government and into all of our pensions. If Newman does not want corporate money, he should advocate that no arts body should accept public money. Where does state cash come from? The answer is from thousands of corporations and employees who work for these companies. Newman talks of the arts being damaged by BP and other sponsors. Really? Where is his evidence? More than ?600m goes to the arts from the private sector each year. The arts would be damaged substantially without it.

Business has been supporting the arts for centuries. Newman should visit the current exhibition at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence on art and banking in Renaissance Florence, which shows how banking profits helped fuel some of the greatest art of all time. Today BP and other companies are doing likewise. Let's celebrate them, not bash them.
Colin Tweedy
Chief executive, Arts & Business

? Robert Newman is spot-on. Just as it was wrong of the LSE to take money from Gaddafi's son, so it is wrong of the Tate, British Museum, National Portrait Gallery and other art institutions to take money from an unaccountable corporation that was "Libya's corporate partner". Nicholas Serota, Neil MacGregor, Sandy Nairne and the other cultural panjandrums can squawk all they like, but taking sponsorship money from BP is bad for the arts and bad for democracy, and it breaches any code of ethics worthy of the name.

How can our most revered, publicly funded arts establishments still allow themselves to be supported by an oil company with a terrible legacy of damage to the environment, communities and so many people? The cynical atrocities of oil corporations in pursuit of wealth and power are being legitimised by the arts establishment. It sullies the arts and undermines the institutions of art.

At a time of economic restraint there are legitimate debates to be had about replacement funding for the arts, but crimes against the environment are crimes against humanity, and oil money is an expedient too far. As the world, and indeed Tate, have learned to flourish without support from slavery, tobacco and alcohol, we and they must learn to emerge from the culture of fossil fuels. It is time to halt the tyranny of oil patronage and cleanse the oil stains from art.
Nick Reeves
Executive director, Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental?Management

? It seems unreasonable of Rob Newman, to say the least, to attack the Tate and the British Museum, among others, for accepting sponsorship from big oil companies. Maybe he lives in a yurt and goes everywhere by bicycle, but the vast majority of the British population use the products of Big Oil every day. BP's best advertising is its petrol stations, not the National Portrait Gallery. Calling our great museums "cathedrals of democracy" that should be unsullied by contact with the grubby world of commerce is nonsensical; they exist to display art and artefacts, not to promote the idea of eco-friendly democracy that appeals to Newman.
Simon Everett
Norwich

? The loss of this sculpture will be greeted with anger (Raiders escape with Hepworth artwork, 21 December). But isn't it just another example of market forces that sustain our economy? A large piece of metal doing nothing; an enterprising team who can turn it into cash? There is something missing ? could it be "losing our soul?"
Alan Harding

Hollywood dialect coach Robert Easton dies at 81

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Character actor and Hollywood dialect coach Robert Easton, whose successes include teaching Forest Whitaker to speak like Idi Amin in the 2006 movie "The Last King of Scotland," has died in Los Angeles. He was 81.

Daughter Heather Woodruff Perry tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/rEfhAQ ) that Easton died of natural causes on Monday at his home in the San Fernando Valley.

His movie credits include "Paint Your Wagon," ''Pete's Dragon," ''Pet Sematary II" and "Primary Colors."

When he was younger, he mainly played country bumpkins on TV shows because of his Southern drawl.

He feared being typecast so he worked on different accents and learned he could mimic regional speech patterns.

As a dialect coach, he worked Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charlton Heston, Liam Neeson, Anne Hathaway and Robert Duvall.

George Michael thanks hospital for saving life (AP)

LONDON ? Fighting back tears, singer George Michael appeared outside his London home Friday to acknowledge that he had nearly died during his monthlong battle with pneumonia.

He said it had been "touch and go" while he was in the intensive care unit of a Vienna hospital battling an extremely dangerous form of pneumonia but that his representatives had "played it down" to avoid alarming his fans.

"They spent three weeks keeping me alive basically," said the singer, who appeared to have lost weight during his ordeal. "I don't want to take you through all of it because some of it I want to protect my family from and I'm sure I'll get it all written down but it was by far the worst month of my life."

He seemed short of breath and at times had trouble speaking during his 10-minute appearance.

"I'm very weak but I feel amazing," the pop star said, wearing a gray overcoat and scarf as he stood in front of a decorated Christmas tree outside his imposing red brick home in the Highgate neighborhood of north London.

The singer behind hits such as "Careless Whisper", "Faith" and "Father Figure" said the experience would make him more spiritual and appreciative of his life.

"I have an amazing, amazing life and if I wasn't spiritual enough before the last four five weeks then I certainly am now," he said.

Michael seemed overcome with emotion as he expressed gratitude for being alive and thanked the medical staff in Vienna for taking such good care of him.

"I really, really, really, really, from the bottom of my heart, thank everybody who sent messages and everybody in that IC unit that made sure I'm still here today," Michael said.

Michael did not provide many medical details about his illness, which forced him to cancel an extensive European tour.

He had streptococcus pneumonia, a bacterial form of the disease that can sometimes lead to fatal complications.

Michael spoke about having "woken up" 10 days ago, implying that he had been in a coma.

He also revealed he had undergone a tracheotomy while in the hospital. This treatment would have helped him to breathe.

"I spent the last 10 days since I woke up literally thanking people for saving my life which is something I have never had to do before and never want to do again," he said.

Michael, 48, had been rushed to AKH Hospital in Vienna late last month after canceling a performance in the Austrian capital. He was released from the hospital Thursday and was deemed fit enough to fly to London, his primary home.

During his hospital stay, some London newspapers reported that he was gravely ill even as the singer's publicists said he was improving. Michael's personal account of his illness Friday seemed to support the newspaper claims that he had been in a life-threatening situation.

Very few details were released during his hospital stay, although Michael's doctors did say publicly he is not suffering from any underlying medical problems.

Michael vowed to resume his career and perform for everyone who had a ticket for his canceled shows. He also said he wants to play one show for the doctors who worked so hard to keep him alive.

"I'm incredibly, incredibly fortunate to be here and incredibly fortunate to have picked up this bug where I did because apparently the hospital in Austria that they rushed me to was absolutely the best place in the world I could have been to deal with pneumonia, so I have to believe that somebody thinks I've still got some work to do here," Michael said.

Hollywood Christian wins South Florida Holiday Classic

The demise of the reigning state champion Hollywood Christian girls basketball team, who will play the balance of the season without star forward and Michigan signee Rebecca Lyttle, was exaggerated after all.

Dismissed as state contenders after Lyttle, the 2011 Class 1A Player of the year, went down with an ACL injury, the Eagles and its rallying cry of ?next girl up? beat Palm Beach Dwyer 65-50 in the South Florida Holiday Girls? Basketball Classic Finals at the Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Hollywood on Friday night.

Ariah Osceola was an easy choice for Tournament MVP after she capitalized on the open looks she got off the Eagles? ?dribble-drive offense? and finished with a game-high 27 points, including five three-pointers. Sarah Kelton added 15 points and Shamauria Bridges proved electric in the open court with 10 points.

?Seeing Rebecca go down, Ariah is a senior that understands if we want to get back to Lakeland and be successful she personally has to step her game up to another level,?? said Eagles coach Carlos Adamson. ?With Rebecca being off the floor, Ariah understand that and has taken that challenge head on.?

After carrying the Eagles (11-3) with 14 first-half points, Osceola snuffed all hopes of a Keyana Harris-led Dwyer (15-2) comeback by hitting one big shot after another in the fourth quarter to close out the game.

Following a 20-footer and two free throws from Harris that cut the lead to 47-39 with 5:40 left in the period, Osceola converted a three-point play off a spin move while being fouled, hit a three-pointer from the right wing and then capped the Eagles 13-4 run with another deep bomb for a 60-43 lead with 2:34 left.

?I just believe in what I do,?? said Osceola. ?I believe my shots will go in every time. I?m just trying to do what I can to help my team out. Rebecca was a big part of our team. You can?t make up for her . She was our best player. We all just have to put in the extra work.?

HC (11-3): A. Osceola 27, Bridges 10, Kelton 15, Jackson , Jinks 6, Isaac 4.

Dwyer (15-2): Ingraham 3, Glodis 8, Harris 15, Lee, Holmes 2, K. Bowers 13, Hayes 1, James 6.

Half: HC 24-17. Three-pointers: Rebounds: Jinks 11. Steals: A. Osceola 4. Assists: Kelton 7.

Sea Shepherd says drones find, photograph Japan's whaling fleet (Reuters)

SYDNEY (Reuters) ? Hardline whaling opponents attempting to stop Japan's annual whale hunt in the Antarctic said Sunday they had intercepted and photographed its whaling fleet using pilotless drone aircraft.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society said it located the Japanese factory ship Nisshin Maru off Australia's western coast Saturday using the drones, the first time this season it has made contact with the whalers.

However, other Japanese ships shielded the vessel "to allow it to escape," Sea Shepherd said in a statement.

"We caught them due west of Perth," founder Paul Watson told Reuters by satellite phone from the ship Steve Irwin. "For the next few days we will be chasing them. We are heading south."

The two drones are equipped with cameras and detection equipment and allow Sea Shepherd to monitor the whaling fleet from a distance, he said.

Watson said Sea Shepherd's three ships were well outside Antarctic waters when the Japanese vessel was seen. The Sea Shepherd waited for the Nisshin Maru after hearing from fishermen it had sailed through the Lombok Strait in Indonesia on its voyage to Antarctic waters.

The Sea Shepherd society's annual attempts to stop the Japanese whale hunt by "direct action" have been widely criticised by other environmentalists and governments, particularly Japan. However, it also has influential supporters.

Watson said sympathisers in New Jersey in the United States contributed to the cost of the two drones.

An international moratorium on whaling has been in place since 1986, but Japan exploits a loophole allowing whaling for scientific purposes to justify its annual hunt.
