iPhone 6 Rumors: Top 3 Features Why You Should For Apple?s Smartphone

As 2012 comes to a close, new rumours emerged claiming that the upcoming iPhone 6 will pack sharp, new features under its belt.

Samsung Galaxy S3 beat Apple's iPhone 5 as the best device of 2012. This will probably inspire Apple to work even harder in making the iPhone 6.

The iPhone 6 is rumoured to be released early next year and one of the possible reasons of the rumoured early release date is because Apple will be launching a redesigned iPhone.

Reports indicate that Apple is looking to switch to a 6-month cycle instead of a 1-year cycle with the iPhone to be more aggressive against competitors such as Samsung and Google. This means consumers may be able to snatch up a colourful iPhone 6 around March 2013.

This rumour is supported by Asymco's analyst Horace Dediu who believes that Apple's future will indeed consist of a new generation of device every six months. This assumption is based on the statement of former Apple CEO John Sculley.

Follow us?? Google Plus

According to Sculley, the company is "going through a very significant change now in terms of product cycles," and that "now it's really introducing products twice a year."

Below are the reasons why you should wait for the upcoming iPhone 6.

  1. Super HD+ Retina IGZO Screen Display - The advantage of the IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) display is the thin assembly, bright colors, and high resolution that require less LEDs, which would mean more energy efficient.
  2. A7 Chip Quad Core Processor - The rumoured A7 quad core processor is claimed to be twice faster and smaller than its predecessor.
  3. Near Field Communication (NFC) - There is a rumour that Apple lost to its rival Samsung Galaxy S3 because the former was afraid to support NFC. All sign points to Apple adding this feature in order to keep up with the competition.

It is initially reported that the iPhone 6 will include a "Super HD" screen display and camera. Speculations claimed that it is beyond the Full HD displays in HTC Droid DNA.

This notion is backed up by an analyst. According to Jefferies stock analyst Peter Misek, "the iPhone 5S has a new 'super HD camera/screen, a better battery, and NFC,' and 'possible updates include an IGZO screen for Retina+, 128GB storage."

Other rumours claimed that iPhone 6 will steer away from its usual hues and will offer 6 to 8 different colours to attract younger generations in buying the handset.

GOP 'fiscal cliff' endgame: Let big government sting the middle class?

For some tea party Republicans, part of the political calculation ahead of the 2014 elections is whether going off the fiscal cliff would spell political disaster or instead be seen as a return to principled governance.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / December 29, 2012

A police officer stands guard outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington Friday. President Barack Obama and congressional leaders agreed to make a final effort to prevent the United States from going over the "fiscal cliff," setting off intense bargaining over Americans' tax rates as a New Year's Eve deadline looms.

Mary Calvert/REUTERS

If President Obama and Congressional leaders fail to avert the ?fiscal cliff? of scheduled tax increases and spending cuts by 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, America?s 114-millon-strong middle class will take it hard on the chin ? a $3,500 tax blow per family, on average.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Politicians make careers out of protecting the middle class, which is why the President has focused his solution on raising taxes just for richer Americans ? those making $250,000 and more ? while warning Americans in his weekly Saturday address that, ?Every American?s paycheck will get a lot smaller? if the fiscal cliff isn?t averted, which specifically ?would hurt middle class families.?

Republican leadership, too, has been forced into a corner, in part by Obama as well as the party?s own right wing, as members have failed to come to agreement over agreeing to some tax concessions for the rich in order to stave off what amounts to a wholesale middle class tax hike.

For some intractable Republican House members, political experts say, part of the political calculation ahead of the 2014 mid-term elections is whether going off the fiscal cliff would spell political disaster or whether it may be seen more broadly as a return to what many see as principled governance.

2012 enters the record books. Were you paying attention? A news quiz.

As Wall Street indices got jittery on Friday, it began to look like some kind of piecemeal deal that would include a tax compromise and extension of unemployment benefits could be done by the drop-dead deadline, but it could be contingent on Republicans having to come back to fight for spending cuts at a later date.

That development puts the spotlight straight back on the kind of anti-tax, anti-spend tea party principles that helped to give the GOP the House in 2010, but which also left the party deeply fractured after Obama?s reelection this November.

To be sure, there may be a deeper logic than simple obstructionism at play within the GOP caucus, where some members, the theory goes, may be seeing an opportunity to avoid direct blame for a major middle class tax hike while making a deeper point about how America should be governed. How? By letting middle-class Americans start bearing the actual cost of electing a progressive president and a Democratic Senate, neither of which has seriously addressed entitlement spending.

?How can we expect people to care about the growth of government if it doesn?t cost them anything?? writes Marc Thiessen, a fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, in a Saturday Washington Post column. ?Big government is great if you don?t have to pay for it. Well, now it?s time to pay the bill. Maybe when the costs of the stimulus, Obamacare and exploding entitlements are finally deducted from their paychecks, Americans will rediscover the virtue of smaller government.?

Liberals point to a counter-logic that they contend will drive even tea party Republicans to strike a last-minute deal to avoid the fiscal cliff.

?If the deal is reached ? the Republicans have won: they have locked in a federal tax system that collects so little total federal revenue that government can afford almost nothing aside from the military, interest payments, retirement programs and health care,? writes Jeffrey Sachs, author of ?The Price of Civilization,? on the Huffington Post.

Is Israel hiding secret source of Christianity?

(Times of Israel) Were the final resting-places of the family and disciples of Jesus discovered 30 years ago and then hidden as part of a religious-political conspiracy?

The archaeological controversy swirling around two Roma-era burial tombs in Jerusalem refuses to die. Indeed, it has become something of an ugly academic slugfest.

In one corner stands the Israeli archaeological establishment represented by the Israel Antiquities Authority and Professor Amos Kloner of Bar-Ilan University, backed by various respected archaeologists and scholars. In the other stands Simcha Jacobovici, the filmmaker and self-styled ?Naked Archaeologist,? backed by another group of respected archaeologists and scholars.

Auto sales look good for '13, but for the 'cliff'

2 hrs.

It?s been a disappointing holiday season for many?retailers, but U.S. car dealers have been busily ringing up sales?as the year wraps up.

If preliminary numbers for December hold up, 2012 could prove to be the industry?s best year since the long recession and painfully weak recovery began. And 2013 is?shaping up to be even better ? unless auto sales fall off the fiscal cliff. ?

?I clearly hope we get some bipartisan effort to avoid the fiscal cliff,? said Ford Motor Co. Chairman Bill Ford Jr. ?It?s vitally important for the economy that we work this out.?

That's true for the auto industry, in particular. After nearly half a decade of struggles, carmakers are ending 2012 on a positive note. November saw demand for new cars, trucks and crossovers surge at a double-digit pace. In fact, a number of makers including Audi, BMW, Honda, Nissan and Porsche are setting all-time sales records for the month. By the end of November, Hyundai had already beaten its previous full-year record set in 2011.

December, meanwhile, is expected to see another gain of around 15 percent, year-over-year, according to a forecast by LMC Automotive. The consulting firm has now upped its final forecast for all of 2012 to 14.5 million and conservatively anticipates another comfortable jump next year.

?The U.S. light-vehicle sales market continues to be a bright spot in the tremulous global environment,? said Jeff Schuster, LMC?s senior vice president of forecasting.? ?The only major roadblock ahead for the U.S. market is the fiscal cliff. Assuming that hurdle is cleared, 2013 is one step closer to a stable and sustainable growth rate for autos, with volume above the 15 million unit mark.?

Barring that setback, analysts anticipate a steady shift in the sort of vehicles Americans have been buying.?

The upcoming North American International Auto Show will feature an assortment of new products, and the debut of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette and Chevy?s next-generation Silverado pickup are likely to be two of the star attractions. But the floor of Detroit?s Cobo Center will be covered with a variety of downsized models, including Honda?s pint-sized Urban SUV Concept and the new Lincoln MKC compact luxury crossover.

Ford's?B- and C-segment models ? subcompacts like the updated 2013 Fiesta and compacts???have jumped from 13 percent?of the overall U.S. market to 24 percent since 2004, according to Mark Fields,?Ford?s chief operating officer.?And the trend is expected to continue at an even faster pace going forward.

If anything, Americans are downsizing powertrains at an even more rapid rate, trading in V-6s for inline-fours and even abandoning traditional V-8s for high-tech turbo V-6s. Six-cylinder engines now account for more than half of the demand in Ford?s big F-Series pickups, Fields said.

While demand for smaller models is soaring, sales of some traditional American vehicles have remained strong ? pickups in particular. Credit the strong upturn in the housing market in recent months, said Mark Reuss, president of North American operations at General Motors.?

While the so-called ?personal use? segment has largely dried up, there?s significant pent-up demand among contractors and other professional for pickups and other full-size trucks, something Detroit?s Big Three hope to use to their advantage as they continue to hold off import competitors like Nissan and Toyota.

Pent-up demand is likely to float all boats, says analyst Joe Phillippi, from the largest to the smallest market segments. It helps, he adds, that automotive interest rates are at or near historic lows.

On the downside, makers have been cutting back incentives as demand outstrips supply, especially of more popular models like the Hyundai Elantra and the new Honda Accord. There are still bargains to be had on slower-selling models, but research by TrueCar.com reveals that incentives have slipped to their lowest levels in several years even as transaction prices ? the price customers actually pay ? have risen to near-record levels.

And that is likely to translate into record industry earnings, at least in North America. Ironically, the market is running counter to trends in much of the rest of the world. European car sales have been in freefall all year, and without a clear resolution of the Continent?s economic crisis, few see any short-term solution.? Even China, which has seen annual growth rates approaching 100 percent over the past decade, has started to stumble.

So, makers from around the world are once again looking to the U.S. to carry the load. The good news is that ?the forecast ahead looks even better,? Toyota?s top U.S. executive, Jim Lentz, recently said, adding that ?analysts expect we will reach 16 million in just a few short years.?

That?s still well short of the U.S. all-time record of 17.5 million vehicles sold in 2005, but it?s still a welcome turnaround from the disastrous slump the industry has only just left behind.

2011 ? 2012 Michigan House and Senate ... - Real Estate 411

The 2011-2012 Michigan House and Senate legislative sessions have wrapped up, yielding some long-fought and well-earned legislative victories for the Michigan Association of REALTORS?. These victories are made possible by the dedication of REALTOR? members across the State:

Appraisal Management Companies-House Bills 4975 & 5271 were introduced in Michigan to be incompliance with federal financial reforms, which require state regulation of AMC?s. The legislation defines, regulates and set penalties for AMC?s operating in Michigan.

Building Inventory Tax Relief-This legislation provides property tax exemptions to inventory and spec homes in new developments. The new law provides new builds and inventory in development with a lower tax assessment until those properties are occupied.

Principal Residence Exemption-The new law alleviates those situations where a person may enter an assisted living facility, (with intentions of returning to their property), leaving their principal residence unoccupied and subject to a higher tax liability.

Principal Residence Enhancement Legislation-This fair, honest and sound property tax reform allows two dates for homebuyers to file for and receive their principal residence exemption, June 1st and November 1st. It also prevents foreclosures from losing their principal residence exemption, making it easier to qualify buyers and moving inventory.

90-Day Foreclosure Extension-The new law extends the 90-day foreclosure to June 30, 2013. This timeframe is important for homeowners as it allows them to meet with the lenders to try and work out a loan modification. It is anticipated that the new legislature will be looking to make changes to the State?s overall foreclosure process in the first 6 months of 2013.
Personal Property Tax Phase-Out-Legislation was passed by the Legislature providing the framework for the phase out of the PPT. This phase-out gives Michigan a clearer path for economic growth and moves the state up the ranks in terms of job competitiveness.
MSHDA Changes-Legislation was recently signed into law that keep the Michigan State Housing Developmemt Authority current and competitive with loan products available to low and moderate income homebuyers across the State.
Legislation Defeated-Occasionally, MAR must work hard to defeat legislation that is not in the best interest of its membership and/or the rights of private property owners. Legislation, which was aimed to exempt persons engaged in ?residential property management? from licensure as real estate brokers/salespersons, was defeated!

UFC 155 picks from Kevin Iole, Maggie Hendricks and Cagereaders like you

UFC 155 is only a day away. It's time for picks from Yahoo! Sports' columnist Kevin Iole, Cagewriter editor Maggie Hendricks, and Cagereaders who posted their picks on Facebook.

Kevin Iole: Junior dos Santos W5 Cain Velasquez -- I can't believe I'm picking against Velasquez. To me, he is in many ways the perfect heavyweight, with great conditioning, great wrestling and tremendous power. But how do we ignore what dos Santos has done? Much was made of Velasquez's knee injury before their first fight, but what isn't as well known is that Junior had a bad leg, too, and couldn't do much. It's going to be a dogfight, but I think Junior finds a way to pull it out.

Maggie Hendricks: Cain Velasquez W5 Junior dos Santos -- Velasquez was injured in his last bout with JDS. With a healthy knee, he'll get to use his wrestling to control and beat on JDS for five rounds.

Cagereaders: Couldn't ask for a better way to end the year than this rematch. This will last longer than the first but not by much. I'm picking Cigano by KO R1. Cain has amazing wrestling and ground and pound. However, I think Junior is the guy that has his number and things won't go as planned for Cain. Velasquez will come out more aggressive than the first fight and that will spell the end. Junior will rock him with some brutal counters causing Cain to shoot in for the take down. Junior will stuff the attempt and finish the fight with an uppercut around 3 minutes into the first. -- Jackson Torres

[Related: Five questions that will be answered at UFC 155]
__

Kevin Iole: Joe Lauzon W3 Jim Miller -- Definitely will be the Fight of the Night in my opinion (is there any other kind of fight for Lauzon?) I don't think Joe will be able to submit Jim, but he is so active and works so hard I think he'll pile up the points to win.

Maggie Hendricks: Joe Lauzon Sub2 Jim Miller -- Lauzon's submission game is tough to beat. He will need to avoid Miller's well-rounded game, but can do it.

Cagereaders: My two favorite 155 pound fighters. When I saw Miller step in for Maynard, my heart sank. I'm going to see one them lose, and it looks to be J-Lau. Miller matches up really well for Lauzon's style. He has power in his punches and solid wrestling, backed up with a serious ground game and outstanding cardio. Joe has a killer instinct and a more dangerous ground game. Still, I like Miller taking this fought by a UD. -- Tom Hogan

--

Kevin Iole: Tim Boetsch W3 Costas Philippou -- Boetsch will grind out a victory by controlling the distance and limiting Philippou's power

Maggie Hendricks: Tim Boetsch W3 Costa Phillippou -- Ditto on what Kevin said. Boetsch won't make it a thrilling fight, but it will be a convincing win.

Cagereaders: Boetsch over Phillipou by 3rd Round TKO -- I think this fight will be back to forth, I have counted out Tim Boetsch in many fights just to be shocked, from the poor decision in the Lombard fight, to the amazing knock out of Okami, I think Phillipou gets the better of him early in the fight, while Boetsch owns the latter part of the fight, this could easily be fight of the night and if it does go decision, it will be close, but I see Phillipou gassing late and Boetsch taking advantage. -- Daniel Ryan

--

Kevin Iole: Alan Belcher TKO2 Yushin Okami -- This outcome would have been unthinkable a year ago, but Belcher improves tremendously each time out and is now one of the world's most complete fighters.

Maggie Hendricks: Alan Belcher W3 Yushin Okami -- With title shot hopes hanging over him, Belcher has good reason to fight a smart game and come out with a win over Okami.

Cagereaders: Yushin Okami will beat Alan Belcher by decision. Okami will go back to what made him successful before his fight with Anderson Silva. He will use his jab and height, keeping Belcher back, then take him down for ground and pound. This will continue for 3 full rounds and Okami will come out with the unanimous decision. -- Marcus Min

__

Kevin Iole: Chris Leben TKO3 Derek Brunson -- This is a big fight for Leben, and I think he knows it. I expect him to eventually catch Brunson with something big that will end it.

Maggie Hendricks: Derek Brunson W3 Chris Leben -- In his first fight after a long layoff, Leben will have a hard time dealing with a wrestler with power like Brunson.

Cagereaders: Derek Brunson should be able to defeat Chris Leben by decision because he has a great wrestling background and Chris Leben may not be in the best shape coming off a 13-month layoff. -- Edgar Diaz

White House meeting a last stab at a fiscal deal

(AP) ? Amid partisan bluster, top members of Congress and President Barack Obama were holding out slim hopes for a limited fiscal deal before the new year. But even as congressional leaders prepared to convene at the White House, there were no signs that legislation palatable to both sides was taking shape.

The Friday afternoon meeting among congressional leaders and the president ? their first since Nov. 16 ? stood as a make-or-break moment for negotiations to avoid across-the-board first of the year tax increases and deep spending cuts.

Obama called for the meeting as top lawmakers alternately cast blame on each other while portraying themselves as open to a reasonable last-minute bargain.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid all but conceded that any effort at this late date was a long shot. "I don't know timewise how it can happen now," he said.

For Obama, the 11th-hour scramble represented a test of how he would balance the strength derived from his re-election with his avowed commitment to compromise. Despite early talk of a grand bargain between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner that would reduce deficits by more than $2 trillion, the expectations were now far less ambitious.

Although there were no guarantees of a deal, Republicans and Democrats said privately that any agreement would likely include an extension of middle-class tax cuts with increased rates at upper incomes, an Obama priority that was central to his re-election campaign. The deal would also likely put off the scheduled spending cuts. Such a year-end bill could also include an extension of expiring unemployment benefits, a reprieve for doctors who face a cut in Medicare payments and possibly a short-term measure to prevent dairy prices from soaring, officials said.

To get there, Obama and Reid would have to propose a package that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would agree not to block with procedural steps that require 60 votes to overcome.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York said he still thinks a deal could be struck.

The Democrat told NBC's "Today" show Friday that he believes the "odds are better than people think."

Schumer said he based his optimism on indications that McConnell has gotten "actively engaged" in the talks.

Appearing on the same show, Republican Sen. John Thune noted the meeting scheduled later Friday at the White House, saying "it's encouraging that people are talking."

But Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., predicted that "the worst-case scenario" could emerge from Friday's talks.

"We will kick the can down the road," he said on "CBS This Morning."

"We'll do some small deal and we'll create another fiscal cliff to deal with the fiscal cliff," he said. Corker complained that there has been "a total lack of courage, lack of leadership," in Washington.

Speaking on the Senate floor Thursday, McConnell cautioned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."

Nevertheless, he said he told Obama in a phone call late Wednesday that "we're all happy to look at whatever he proposes."

If a deal were to pass the Senate, Boehner would have to agree to take it to the floor in the Republican-controlled House.

Boehner discussed the fiscal cliff with Republican members in a conference call Thursday and advised them that the House would convene Sunday evening. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an ally of the speaker, said Boehner told the lawmakers that "he didn't really intend to put on the floor something that would pass with all the Democratic votes and few of the Republican votes."

But Cole did not rule out Republican support for some increase in tax rates, noting that Boehner had amassed about 200 Republican votes for a plan last week to raise rates on Americans earning $1 million or more. Boehner ultimately did not put the plan to a House floor vote in the face of opposition from Republican conservatives and a unified Democratic caucus.

"The ultimate question is whether the Republican leaders in the House and Senate are going to push us over the cliff by blocking plans to extend tax cuts for the middle class," White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said. "Ironically, in order to protect tax breaks for millionaires, they will be responsible for the largest tax increase in history."

Boehner, McConnell, Reid and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi are all scheduled to attend Friday's White House meeting with Obama. Vice President Joe Biden will also participate in the meeting, the White House said.

Despite the urgency to act, the rhetoric Thursday was quarrelsome and personal.

The House of Representatives is "being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker," Reid said on the Senate floor. He attributed Boehner's reluctance to put a version of Senate bill that raised tax rates on incomes above $250,000 for couples to fears he could lose his re-election as speaker next week.

"Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff," countered Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner.

If a deal is not possible, it should become evident at Friday's White House meeting. If that occurs, Obama and the leaders would leave the resolution to the next Congress to address in January.

Such a delay could unnerve the stock market, which performed erratically Thursday amid the developments in Washington. Economists say that if the tax increases are allowed to hit most Americans and if the spending cuts aren't scaled back, the recovering but fragile economy could sustain a traumatizing shock.

But a sentiment is taking hold that despite a black eye to its image, Congress could weather the fiscal cliff without significant economic consequences if it acts decisively next month.

"Going over is likely because at this point both sides probably see a better deal on the other side of the cliff," Jared Bernstein, Biden's former economic adviser, wrote in a blog post Thursday.

By letting current tax cuts expire and rise, Bernstein and others say, Republicans would be voting to lower taxes next month, even if not for all taxpayers. Democrats ? and Obama ? would be in a stronger position to demand that taxpayers above the $250,000 threshold pay higher taxes, instead of the $400,000 threshold that Obama proposed in his latest offer to Boehner.

And the debate over spending cuts, including changes to politically sensitive entitlement programs such as Medicare, would have to start anew.

Mood muted during last holiday shopping weekend

ATLANTA (AP) ? Last-minute shoppers crowded into malls and stores during the last weekend before Christmas, but many didn't seem to be in the spending spirit.

This holiday season, Americans have a lot on their minds on top of the now familiar job worries.

Consumers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, which account for 24 percent of retail sales nationwide, were tripped up by Superstorm Sandy. The storm hit in late October and disrupted businesses and households for several weeks.

Shoppers are also increasingly worried about the fast approaching "fiscal cliff" deadline ? the possibility that a stalemate between Congress and the White House over the U.S. budget could trigger a series of tax increases and spending cuts starting Jan. 1. Confidence among U.S. consumers dropped to its lowest point in December since July because of growing concerns about the economy, according to a monthly index released Friday.

And the recent Newtown, Conn., school shooting also dampened shoppers' spirits, analysts said.

This confluence of factors has led to a muted approach to holiday shopping ? bad news for retailers, which can make up to 40 percent of annual sales during November and December and were counting on the last weekend before Christmas to make up for lost dollars earlier in the season. The Saturday before Christmas was expected to be the second biggest sales day behind the Friday after Thanksgiving.

"It's so hard to put yourself in the mood," said Linda Fitzgerald, a 51-year-old nurse from Yonkers who was with her 17-month-old granddaughter at The Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J., on Saturday. She was out Christmas shopping for the first time this year.

She planned to spend $1,500 on gifts such as clothes for her boyfriend, down dramatically from $4,000 last year. She had expected to start shopping last weekend, but simply didn't feel like it, facing a sister's cancer diagnosis and worry about the economy and the Connecticut shooting.

Similarly, Deborah O'Conner, 51, from Westwood, N.J., also at Garden State Plaza on Saturday, had intentions of finishing her holiday shopping early, but Superstorm Sandy put a wrench in her plans. She spent all last month helping out her parents and her cousin, whose Long Island, N.Y., homes suffered damage

"I had planned to be out early but it didn't happen," said O'Conner, the mother of three children, ages 22, 19 and 15. "If it weren't for the storm, I would have been done."

Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst at NPD Inc., a market research firm with a network of analysts at shopping centers around the country, estimates that customer traffic over the weekend was in line with the same time a year ago, but shoppers seem to be spending less.

"There was this absence of joy for the holiday," he said. "There was no Christmas spirit. There have been just too many distractions."

After a strong Black Friday weekend, the four-day weekend that starts on Thanksgiving, when sales rose 2.7 percent, the lull that usually follows has been even more pronounced. Sales fell 4.3 percent for the week ended Dec. 15, according to the latest figures from ShopperTrak, which counts foot traffic and its own proprietary sales numbers from 40,000 retail outlets across the country. On Wednesday, ShopperTrak cut its forecast for holiday spending down to 2.5 percent growth to $257.7 billion, from prior expectations of a 3.3 percent rise.

Attempting to drum up enthusiasm, retailers have expanded hours and stepped up discounts. Toys R Us stores are staying open for 88 consecutive hours beginning Friday at 6 a.m. through Christmas Eve at 10 p.m. Macy's opened most stores from Friday at 7 a.m. until Sunday at midnight. And other retailers like Target and Nordstrom expanded hours at some locations.

At the malls, overall promotions were up 2 to 3 percent from last year heading into the weekend, after being down 5 percent earlier in the season, according to BMO Capital Markets sales rack index, which tracks the depth and breadth of discounts.

At The Garden State Plaza, teen retailer Aeropostale discounted all clothing and accessories by 60 percent. Charles David, Cachet and AnnTaylor had cut prices by 50 percent of all merchandise. At AnnTaylor, racks of discounted clothes had been marked down by an additional 25 percent. One dress, originally priced at $118, was marked down to $49 but with the additional 25 percent, it cost $21.30.

But the deals at the mall failed to impress Wendy McCloskey, 35, of Lebanon, Ind., who started her holiday shopping Sunday at the Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis. The snow storm that blew through the Midwest this week delayed her shopping plans, and a busy schedule with her children also got in the way. She has two teenagers and a 12-year-old, and they are all involved in sports.

She wanted to buy shoes at the Finish Line online, but balked at paying $40 for shipping. In the store, she bought five pairs of sneakers for $390. But she'd expected to see bigger discounts at the mall.

"I was so surprised, I figured they'd have better deals," she said.

Single-Click Double-Tap Murder

hunter-killerGun control is on many minds this week, but let's not talk about guns. Let's talk about drones. (With a reported 300 million guns in private hands in America already, it's probably too late for gun control anyhow.) Drones are to nation-states what assault rifles are to psychotic mass murderers. Worse yet, the way things are going, it's only a matter of time until alpha insurgencies like Hezbollah and the Zetas have their own fleets of armed or kamikaze drones.

New Delhi rape exposes the perils of being a woman in India ...

Rape

By Harmeet Shah Singh and Mallika Kapur, CNN

NEW DELHI (CNN) ? Bhavyaa Sharma feels vulnerable in the Indian capital.

The 19-year-old student at a leading women?s college in New Delhi fears for her safety when she leaves the campus. Sexual assaults on women in the city have horrified her and her female friends.

On Sunday, a 23-year-old woman was gang-raped and beaten to near death on a moving bus in New Delhi, police say. She is in intensive care at a city hospital, battling for her life.

The attack sparked furious protests across India, where official data show that rape cases have jumped almost 875% over the past 40 years ? from 2,487 in 1971 to 24,206 in 2011.

New Delhi alone reported 572 rapes last year and more than 600 in 2012.

?I feel vulnerable here,? said Sharma, accompanied by her classmates. ?I am very sure about it. Delhi is not safe for women.?

Sharma is from Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state. She joined Miranda House, a women?s residential college in New Delhi, in 2010. She?s now close to graduation.

But her stay in the Indian capital hasn?t been without a bitter experience. She says she was groped while commuting in a bus in this city.

?It wasn?t traumatic. But I cannot forget it, either. Definitely, I cannot forget it,? Sharma said.

She called her parents back home that day, who tried to comfort her. Still, she couldn?t hold back her tears. ?I cried the entire night,? she said.

Her hostel colleagues shared their own encounters with unwanted behaviors on the streets of New Delhi.

In her first year of college, a group of men stalked Shweta Prakash, 20, and her friends every night they would leave their apartment for dinner.

?It actually freaks you out when people do such things to you ? eye-teasing, passing lewd comments and stalking you. They literally rape you with their eyes,? she said.

Now, she keeps pepper spray and has enrolled in self-defense taekwondo programs.

Prakash and her friends hold each others? hands while walking and text license plate numbers and their location to their parents and others when they travel in a cab or a slow-moving auto-rickshaw.

As young girls, elders, too, faced similar attitudes, which they say only worsened as the city and the country grew.

?I can speak about my own experience, as a student, in this city ? people are pinching you, touching you, someone is coming close to you. This is absolutely the mentality where you look at a woman as an object of sex and (which) you use and abuse,? rights activist Ranjana Kumari said.

As furor about Sunday?s assault rose, some Indian lawmakers even called for treating rape as a capital crime.

The country?s human rights body shot off notices to city police and federal authorities, demanding an explanation of the latest sexual assault.

?The incident has raised the issue of declining public confidence in the law and order machinery in the city, especially in its capacity to ensure safety of women, as a number of such incidents have been reported in the national capital in the recent past,? the National Human Rights Commission said in a statement Tuesday.

Five people, including the bus driver and a minor, have been arrested in connection with Sunday?s rape, New Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said.

Meantime, some observers say anti-women acts in India stem from the country?s largely patriarchal social setup.

Indians? preference for sons over daughters, for example, has manifested itself in a worrisome population imbalance. The 2011 census of the world?s second-most populous nation recorded an alarming drop in the percentage of girls among country?s preschoolers.

For every 1,000 boys up to 6 years old, the census counted 914 girls, a drop from 927 a decade ago.

It?s illegal in India to abort a child because of its sex, but such abortions happen, often aided by illegal clinics.

?The reasons for the high number of female feticide in India include a deep-rooted traditional son preference, continued practice of dowry and concern for safety of the girl child and exploitation and abuse of women and girl children,? Krishna Tirath, India?s women and child development minister, acknowledged in parliament in March 2011.

A senior legal expert says legislation alone cannot resolve anti-women biases.

?More law will only serve to give a sense of something being done, when in fact very little is being done. To confront the hatred that is now manifesting itself in the most egregious ways is to move forward as a society,? Ratna Kapur, a professor at Jindal Global Law School, wrote in The Hindu newspaper Wednesday.

?We need to think about how we can handle women?s equality in ways that are not perceived as threatening. That demands greater responsibility on the part of parents as well as society not to raise sons in a way in which they are indoctrinated with a sense of superiority and privilege. There is also a need on the part of young men to be actively involved in their schools and communities in advocating women?s equality rights,? she added in her opinion column, headlined ?Rape and the crisis of Indian masculinity.?

Elwood Jensen, pioneer in cancer biology research, 1920-2012 ...

Elwood V. Jensen, known worldwide for his pioneering research on how steroid hormones exert their influence through specific receptors in target cells, died from pneumonia on Sunday, Dec. 16, in suburban Cincinnati. He was 92.

Jensen was the Charles B. Huggins Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in the Ben May Department for Cancer Research and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Chicago.

His discoveries led to the development of drugs that can enhance or inhibit the effects of hormones, earning him many honors, including membership in the National Academy of Sciences in 1974 and the Lasker Award in 2004 for outstanding contributions to basic and clinical medical research. They transformed the treatment of breast cancer patients in a way that, according to the Lasker Foundation, ?saves or prolongs more than a 100,000 lives annually.?

?Jensen?s revolutionary discovery of estrogen receptors is beyond doubt one of the major achievements in biochemical endocrinology of our time,? said Gene DeSombre, professor emeritus at UChicago, who worked with Jensen as a post-doctoral fellow and then as a colleague.

?His work is hallmarked by great technical ingenuity and conceptual novelty,? DeSombre said. ?His promulgation of simple yet profound ideas concerning the role of receptors in estrogen action has been of greatest importance for research on the basic and clinical physiology of not only estrogens, but also of all other categories of steroid hormones.?

Before Jensen, DeSombre said, how hormones caused their effects was ?a complete mystery.?

In the 1950s, biochemists thought a hormone entered a cell, where it triggered a series of oxidation and reduction reactions. These provided energy for growth stimulation and other estrogen-specific actions.

Working with estradiol, Jensen proved that hormones do not undergo chemical change to elicit a response?an accepted explanation at the time. Instead, he found that they bind to a receptor protein within the cell. This hormone-receptor complex then travels to the cell nucleus, where it regulates gene expression.

?That really got him into some hot water,? DeSombre recalled.

But his initial exposure was limited. When he first presented preliminary data at a 1958 meeting in Vienna, only five people attended. Three of them were the other speakers.

From the late 1950s to the 1970s, Jensen published a series of major and highly original discoveries in four related areas that transformed hormone research:

  • In 1958, he showed that only the tissues that respond to estrogens, such as those of the female reproductive tract, were able to concentrate injected estradiol from the blood. This uptake pattern suggested that these cells must contain specific binding proteins, which he called ?estrogen receptors.? He subsequently identified the estrogen receptor in cells of the uterus?the first receptor found for any steroid hormone.
  • In 1967, Jensen and Jack Gorski of the University of Illinois showed that these putative receptors were macromolecules that could be extracted from these tissues. When estrogens bound to this receptor in the nucleus, the receptor complex activated specific genes, stimulating new RNA synthesis.
  • By 1968, Jensen had devised a reliable test for the presence of estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells. It had been known for decades that about one-third of premenopausal women who had advanced breast cancer would respond to estrogen blockade brought about by removing their ovaries, the source of estrogens, but there was no way to predict which women would respond. In 1971, Jensen showed that women with receptor-rich breast cancers often have remissions following removal of the sources of estrogens, but cancers that contain few or no estrogen receptors do not respond to estrogen-blocking therapy.
  • In 1980, Jensen and Geoffrey Greene, also in the University of Chicago?s Ben May Institute, had developed monoclonal antibodies directed against the human estrogen receptor, which enabled them to quickly and accurately detect and count estrogen receptors in breast and other tumors. By the mid-1980s, this test had become a standard part of care for breast cancer patients.

Following Jensen?s lead, researchers soon discovered that the receptors for the other major steroid hormones?such as progesterone, testosterone and cortisone?worked essentially the same way.

By the early 1970s, Jensen was searching for medications, rather than surgical procedures, to shield estrogen-dependent tumors from circulating hormones. He and colleague V. Craig Jordan (then at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in Massachusetts) found that most women with cancers that contain large amounts of estrogen receptor could benefit from treatment with tamoxifen, a compound that blocks some of the effects of estrogens. The Food and Drug Administration approved tamoxifen for breast cancer treatment in 1977 and for breast cancer prevention in 1990.

?We were glad,? Jensen would later recall, ?we could do something that helped patients with breast cancer, to know that our basic research findings could be extended to the clinical management of patients with this terrible disease.?

Born Jan. 13, 1920, in Fargo, N.D., Elwood Vernon Jensen grew up in Springfield, Ohio. His mother, a schoolteacher, taught him to read at a young age, so when he entered school at the age of 4 he immediately jumped ahead two grade levels.

?I was kind of tall, skinny and socially immature,? he said in an interview in 2009. ?This was a handicap.?

But he took up boxing as a student at Wittenberg College and found that being tall and thin was an advantage. He decisively won his first two matches, at a local golden gloves tournament with 3,000 people watching, including his future wife.

?All the applause,? he recalled in an interview many years later with an Ohio newspaper. ?That was the turning point in my life.?

He graduated from Wittenberg in 1940 with a degree in chemistry, began a graduate chemistry program at the University of Chicago in the fall, and married Mary Collette in June 1941. Six months later, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the ensuing war altered their plans. Poor eyesight kept him from becoming a pilot, so he joined a research project on chemical warfare at the University.

Two hospitals stays, after his experiments ?proceeded more vigorously than anticipated,? helped him focus his nascent career on combining chemistry with medicine.

Despite the delay, he completed his PhD in 1944, spent a year working with his doctoral adviser on a synthetic rubber project, then obtained a Guggenheim Fellowship to study steroid chemistry at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

Jensen often declared that his most important lesson from a year in Europe was learned not in the lab but in the Alps. Despite having no experience, he accepted a friend?s invitation to climb the Matterhorn, the last major peak in Europe to be conquered.

?It was the hardest physical challenge I would ever encounter,? he would later write, but the history of this fabled peak taught him ?the lesson of the alternative approach.? The first team to reach the summit, in 1865, took a route up the northeast face that others had dismissed as impossible.

In 1947, Jensen joined the University of Chicago as an assistant professor of surgery where he worked closely with Charles Huggins, who would win the Nobel Prize in 1966 for his work on hormones and prostate cancer. Huggins ?taught me medicine,? Jensen wrote in a commentary for Nature Medicine in 2004, ?and I taught him some chemistry.?

In 1951, Jensen became one of the original members of the Ben May Laboratory for Cancer Research, founded that year by Huggins. In 1957, working with colleagues at Fermilab, Jensen built an apparatus for labeling estradiol with tritium, a radioactive marker that let him track the hormone as it traveled through the blood stream to the tissues, such as the uterus, that contained its receptor. This was his alternative approach: to ?determine not what the hormone does to the tissue, but what the tissue does with the hormone.?

?I really admired him,? said former colleague Shutsung Liao, professor in the Ben May Department for Cancer Research and an authority on male hormones and cancer. ?He was very careful, very serious in how he applied his knowledge of chemistry to biological problems. He opened a whole new field.?

He was promoted to professor in 1960. He became director of the Ben May Laboratory in 1969 when Huggins stepped down. He served in that role until 1982. After his wife died in 1982, Jensen took an extended leave from UChicago to serve as medical director for the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Zurich from 1983-87.

In Zurich, he met Hiltrud Herborg, known as Peggy, a popular cabaret singer. They married in December 1983. She later was diagnosed with breast cancer. After testing positive for the estrogen receptor, she was successfully treated with a medication that prevents estrogen synthesis.

Jensen returned to Chicago with his wife in 1988. In 1990, he turned 70, which was the mandatory retirement age at the time. Jensen continued to do research and spent time at the National Institutes of Health, Cornell Medical College, the University of Hamburg and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. In 2002, he joined the University of Cincinnati where he was the George J. and Elizabeth Wile Chair in Cancer Research. He was able to continue his research there until late last year.

Jensen retained a strong relationship with the University of Chicago. He was honored at a symposium held in 2001 marking the 50th anniversary of the Ben May Institute for Cancer Research and again in 2004 on the day his Lasker Award was anounced.?

?We all miss Elwood already,? said Geoffrey Greene, the Virginia and D. K. Ludwig Professor and Vice Chair of the Ben May Department for Cancer Research, who came to the Jensen lab as a post-doctoral student in 1974. ?He was my mentor and had an enormous influence on my career and the careers of many investigators from around the world who spent time in his lab. He knew everything that was going on in the lab and the field of hormone action, but encouraged us to question existing dogma and follow our data. Despite his international reputation and stature in the field, he was very easy going, approachable and friendly.?

Jensen is survived by his second wife and two children from his first marriage: Thomas Jensen, MBA, who lives in Ecuador; and Karen Jensen, a radiologist who graduated from the University of Chicago?s Pritzker School of Medicine in 1977 and lives in New Hampshire.

?He loved his work and was very devoted to the laboratory and to his scientific colleagues, but he was also a good father,? said Thomas Jensen, ?He learned to ski in Switzerland and he taught my sister and me at a very early age. We skied together in the winters and spent many of our summers at a place we called Jensen Island, in the middle of Lake Meddybemps in Maine. When I think of my father, I imagine him at the lake cottage, hammering, fixing something.?

The University of Cincinnati is arranging a memorial service in his honor in January 2013, and the University of Chicago is planning symposium in his honor next spring.
